SOME HISTORICAL FACTS
1. The Blackpool Tower has proudly stood over the Fylde coast for 130 years.
2. The most advanced modern buildings move with the elements. the Blackpool Tower was miles ahead of its time. In heavy winds, which are common at the seaside, The Tower will gently sway along with it.
3. On September 29th 1891, The Blackpool Tower’s foundation stone was laid with a time capsule buried underneath it.
4. Given The Tower’s height, the number of surrounding buildings and the fact that it is built with 2,500 tonnes of iron and 5 million bricks, Thanks to a unique design and clever construction, in the unlikely event that The Tower did fall down, it would fall into the sea rather than the buildings around it.
5. At the top of The Tower is the ‘Walk of Faith’ first opened in 1998. It was originally made of two sheets of laminated glass, two inches thick and weighed half a tonne. The newly constructed glass floor and window can now hold the weight of two elephants. So no need to be scared!
6. The Tower Ballroom dancefloor area measures 120 by 102 feet and was made with more than 30,600 separate planks of oak, mahogany and walnut wood.
7. Originally 10,000 light bulbs were used to illuminate the Tower. These have been replaced by 25,000 eco-friendly LED lights.
8. It takes seven years to paint The Tower structure from top to bottom. This time includes the replacement of any corroded steelwork.
